Maria Agovino

Maria Carmela Capistrano Agovino was born on July 16th, 1934 in Sarno, Italy to Giovanni Capistrano and Teresa Ippolito. She was their only child but was surrounded by a village of beloved family including her many aunts and uncles. Maria married her beloved husband, Michele Agovino, in October of 1957. In the winter of 1958, they left Italy for the United States. Maria was a proud seamstress who worked for Brooks Brothers both in Manhattan as well as in Long Island City. This upcoming December, Maria would have been in Pelham Bay for 65 years. She was the familial matriarch and desired for everyone to sit at her table for a meal. She is the mother of Vincenzo Agovino and Maragrazia Mannino and mother-in-law of Michelle and Rosario. More than just a matriarch, she was extremely proud to be the Nonna of the family. She was deeply involved in the lives of her six grandchildren named Michael, Stefanie, Vincenzo, Santina, Gemma, and Maria. Maria was passionate about her family, her community, St. Theresa’s Church, and her kitchen. She yearned to have parties, dress-up, and enjoy her days with company. Maria also leaves behind her Aunt “Zia Sisella” Finizia and dear first cousins Nunzio, Michelina, Joseph, and Filomena. She was the rock, she was steadfast, and determined; even in death. She was our matriarch, our Maria, our beloved Nonna.

Maria Agovino passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Ralph Giordano Funeral Home, 1727 Crosby Ave., Bronx, NY on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mrs.Agovino at St Theresa Church, 2855 St Theresa Ave., Bronx, NY on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 9:45 a.m.  Interment to follow St. Raymond's Cemetery (St Martin Section).
